Orno began in 1921 as a workshop in Kamppi, central Helsinki. Stockmann, the Helsinki department store, became its main owner in 1936, and production moved to Kerava in the late 1930s. The design office stayed with Stockmann in Helsinki, and fittings and catalogues of the period carry the name Stockmann-Orno.
Gunilla Jung was chief designer after the Stockmann takeover until her death in 1939. Lisa Johansson-Pape joined in 1942; her Ihanne lamp dates from 1947. Yki Nummi designed for Orno from the early 1950s until 1973, when Heikki Turunen became chief designer.
Stockmann sold the company in 1985.
